6 days till Christmas!

Christmas is almost here!  Time to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus!  As we get ready for the busy Christmas weekend, we strive to remember the reason we are celebrating.  Keep Christ in Christmas! I am sure you heard this throughout the last month.  It is good to hear over and over again! Keep CHRIST in Christmas!  Keep him as the center of your celebrations and the reason for which you celebrate.  We are given blessing after blessing after blessing; Jesus being the biggest blessing of all.  Keep CHRIST in your Christmas!

Christmas in Alaska:

We’ve got snow!  I know some Wisconsinites are wishing they had some.  Anyone is welcome here for Christmas.  Please, come and enjoy the snow and yet quite pleasant temperatures.  It’s been in the 20’s for the past few days.  Not the normal temperature for this time of year, but well appreciated.  Due to the warm up, the roads continue to be ice covered and slippery.  Learning how to drive in winter all over again. 

Jason has been very busy with two sermons each week, and now three for this week.  He continues to LOVE what the Lord is allowing him to do.  We had a friendship Sunday this past week, and had a few guests there.  It was a more simplified service, with everything placed in the bulletin.  We look forward to more of these in the future.  I continue to play organ for church probably twice a month.  I have also pulled out my flute to accompany choir and play with the organ.  It is great to be playing again.  We had about 16 members go Christmas caroling last Sunday.  IT was so much fun!  We went to two nursing homes here in town.  After caroling, the director and I decided that our church choir should be way more than five people!  We truly have some great singers that aren’t in choir!  Other church news: About 50 members each Sunday!  Ladies group Christmas party had 14 people and was a great success.  Outreach team meeting and coming up with some great upcoming events.  And much more!

I have 2 days left of work, then am off till January 9!  I had had a trip planned to go to Wisconsin! Was going to be a great awesome surprise, but it didn’t work out.  TO make a VERY long story short, I had to cancel my flight due to my principal at school not allowing me to use a personal day on a teacher work day.   A bit frustrating, since it was the deal of a lifetime, but I guess it is not meant to be at this time.  We will pray something else comes around.  Even though life is going great, and we have been extremely blessed since we arrived, there are times I just need to see family and friends.  Due to the darkness too, it would be great to leave Fairbanks for a bit!  We’ll see. 

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Finley!  He is 6 months old today!  We are so proud of all our puppy has accomplished in his short life.  Even though he has taken a few steps backward(in his teenage months we are told); not coming when called, not sitting on command, biting and mouthing a bit more, we STILL LOVE HIM.  You’ll see from the pictures that he is growing and changing like crazy.  He is close to 50 pounds, and getting darker and darker. 

Sent out Christmas packages to families!  Even though we think they should get them in time, we will do it much sooner next year.  The post office up here is INSANE during Christmas.  I am sure all are busy, but this one just seems extra busy.  Have definitely enjoyed getting Christmas cards and packages; it really helps when being so far away from loved ones.

Christmas Eve we plan to spend here at home, after our service at church, enjoying our small but wonderful family.  We plan to open our gifts, and probably enjoy some good traditional Christmas Eve food.  If we are able, we will skype the Schmill clan around 11:00 their time, to see how gift opening is going.  Christmas Day we will head to a member’s home after worship to enjoy some good company, great food, and God-willing a Packer win!  I am looking forward to my break from work, and hope to get much accomplished.  ON December 27, (happy birthday Angela and Beth), we are attending Mannheim Steamroller!  Yes !  All the way up here in Fairbanks!  See, it isn’t so bad, even Mannheim came all the way here.

My latest achievements!  I have been keeping really busy expanding my knitting skills.  I have moved from scarves to hats and other things. (Can't show all my pics because some are Christmas gifts.  More to come)  This was a baby hat given to a friend of mine back in WI.  She just had a little girl.

Baby boy hat made for a member who just had a baby boy two days ago.  I really love knitting, and hope to keep experiementing.  So if you have any requests, I am up for making anything.  Gloves, socks, and baby booties are next on my list to master.

I know yet again it has been a LONG time since my last post.  Life continues to be LIFE!

Since the last time I wrote, there really isn’t too much new.  So this one will be mostly pictures.

Holiday times have been a little bit harder than I thought; more for me than for Jason.  I very much miss all my friends and family.  We are very blessed to have each other though, our congregation, and of course our puppy!  We definitely pray the winter goes quickly, and that friends and family may be able to come up soon.  My younger sister, Kimberly, plans to come up with College Choir from MLC in February.  They won’t be able to make it all the way up here, we will have to go down to them in Anchorage.  It will be amazing to have her in the state.  Anyone is welcome ANYTIME!  We know it is a HUGE expensive trip, but our door is always open.

Temperatures have been up and down.  Today, high of 45 degrees! Crazy.  Warmer than Manitowoc, WI.  The bad thing is this is when the roads get very bad.  They become a sheet of ice; so we will see what tomorrow brings.

Finley is about 45 pounds and almost 6 months old (Dec. 19) and is doing great!  The pictures will show what he’s been up to!

Church work continues to go well.  Jason is VERY busy with two sermons a week and lots of other work to be done.  He is learning how to balance his time wisely.  It is a learning experience for all of us.  I continue to teach Sunday school and play organ occasionally.  We have started Advent services here at Syndoulos.  They haven’t had Wednesday night services for quite a few years, so it was neat to get them going again.  We had quite a good turnout for our first service, as well as our soup and sandwich meal.  God is good! 

Friday night we went to a UAF (University of Alaska Fairbanks) Nanook hockey game.  It was so much fun!  WE got free tickets from a church member.  We hope to continue to go to things like this.  Fairbanks is a very busy city, with a HUGE arts program!  There is always so much to see and do through the long winter.  We are looking forward to experiencing many new things.  We are in search of cross country skis and boats so that we can start trying out all the beautiful trails. 

December 21^st brings the SHORTEST day of the year!  We are almost there!  From there, it turns around and we start gaining sunlight and minutes back.  4 hours and 26 minutes of sunlight today :(

Some members gave us this awesome big tree that they got from the transfer site (a nice name for the dump where people toss stuff they don't want), but actually people get rid of really nice stuff.  Beautiful tree.  Finley had just spend 4 hours playing with 4 kids, and was completely wore out, but of course had to sleep right by us.

November . . . Brrrrrrrrr!

Hi All!

It’s been a bit since the last time I blogged.  You will see by the post that life has gotten just a bit busier, not allowing me to have as much time to post.

Anyways, here is what has been going on in the month of November:

We’ll start with Finley.  Our not so little puppy will be 5 months old on Saturday!!!  Can’t believe we’ve had him for 3 months already.  Actually, scratch that.  It seems like we’ve had him for much much longer.  He is definitely still a handful, but improving in some areas.  He is an expert at letting us know when he needs to go outside.  He is about 36 pounds and growing.  His fur is getting a bit darker, too.  He graduates from Puppy 2 next week Tuesday.  Even though he has some things down perfectly, he still has some things to work on.  One being not getting so excited and jumping up on people.  It’s a work in progress.  We love him to pieces, and are so glad to have him.  As winter continues on, and the sun begins to not shine as much, I am so glad I have him to keep me busy and distracted.  Oh, and he just got some booties!  He has not enjoyed going outside lately because his paws get frozen so quickly.  A coworker made some booties for him ($30 at Petco).  So it was great to get some from her, and the pattern so that I can make some more.  We will test them out in the snow tomorrow, but he did ok with them in the house.  Of course he ran funny, and chewed on them, but he will hopefully realize how great they are tomorrow. 

The weather!?  Well, all I gotta say is BRRRRRRRR!  In just the past few days, the temperatures have completely dropped.  Last Friday it was 18 degrees ABOVE.  Tonight, 30 BELOW!  Yes, - 30!!!  Never thought I would ever experience this!  In all honesty though, - 30 is cold, yes!  But, it isn’t  as bad as it sounds  Even though I didn’t believe them when they said it would be a dry cold, it makes a big difference.  I would say that – 20 feels like 0 back in WI.  We are blessed with almost NO wind at all, which makes a huge difference.  The snow is very light and fluffy, so the roads are not bad at all.  We hear they just keep getting better as it gets colder.  So I guess that is a positive to the cold temps.  So I think we should survive the cold, as long as it doesn’t last too long.  Definitely could use a nice trip to Hawaii, Arizona, or Florida!  Oh by the way, this mornings’ temp, -38!

6 hours and 18 minutes of daylight

Work for me is going pretty well.  Nothing too much new or different.  A good friend of mine left work due to having her first baby.  I miss her very much, but hope to keep in touch.  In the pictures you’ll see a cake I made for her goodbye party.  First try at decorating. I’m no expert, but I’ll keep experimenting. 

Church work has taken off!  Jason has been kept very busy with many new activities starting at Syndoulos.  With Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas, he is busy writing sermons and also meeting with members.  We continue to get to know the members better and better.  We were invited to three homes for Thanksgiving, so we look forward to that special day with “new” family members.  Jason and the members are working towards Ministry Teams; groups that both men and women can join, participate, and share their gifts.  We look forward to getting theses four teams up and running.  Our womens’ group, Northern GLOW (God’s Lights of the World) is up and running strong.  We recently began a prayer chain, a plan for birthday cards for members, a donation to the local food bank, Christmas decorating, Advent supper planning, baby showers, and much more.  It is great to get together and grow together with the fellow women of the congregation.  I am learning so much from them all!  Our choir is busy with many new songs as well.  God continues to bless us and the work here at Syndoulos.  Each Sunday we have at least one visitor, attendance is around 50 each Sunday, Pastor is teaching his first BIC classes, and members are excited to do the Lord’s work.  What could be better!  Thank you Lord for all you have done!

In our free time, (what free time?), we continue to winterize the house and enjoy some relaxing time.  We are in the process of putting plastic on all the windows (our house has 20 windows!), preparing our emergency kit for our car, and anything else we think we need to do.   We hope these things will help decrease the cost of our heating prices. We have to buy oil up here in Alaska, which is very expensive.  We thought we would have natural gas, being that the pipe line is 10 minutes down the road.  I stay busy by getting together with a group of true Alaskan women every Wednesday night.  My friend Kari from work invited me to join her group of friends, and it has been a great way to meet people.  Most of them live in “dry” cabins.  No electricity or water!  Crazy lifestyles, but oh so simple.  I also try to go to as many Alaskan “bazaars as possible (just like WI craft fairs, but better).  Jason, Finley, and myself do try to get out hiking and walking as well.  But with the negative temps, that may not happen as often.  We’ve been going to a golf course north of town which has beautiful views.  We can let Finley run off leash; which he LOVES! Some pics below will show him having a great time here.  Other than that, we don’t do anything too crazy.  It would be great to drive out of town or visit Anchorage, but the 6 hour drive just doesn’t sound too appealing in winter.

People have been telling us to plan a trip somewhere warm in January – March.  We would LOVE to go to Hawaii, since that is supposedly where Alaskans vacation. (very reasonable ticket prices).  But we may have to wait another year or so.  We’ll see how cold it gets in the next few months.

Well, I hve written a book.  So now I am done. 

We pray that your Thanksgiving goes well.  Cherish those moments you have with your family.  You never know when you might move to Alaska!  Love you all!  Miss you family!

Still enjoys snuggle time.  Hopefully he will never outgrow this!

Happy Reformation!

Hello November! It was a great October! Happy Reformation everyone!

As October comes to a close, we are preparing for the dead of winter!  The -40 temps are coming (we are told).  I still don’t believe it!  We are staying very nice and warm in our house, but spend quite a bit of time outside with our puppy.  Finley LOVES the snow and doesn’t mind the cold one bit.  He loves running around in the woods, eating snow, fetching sticks (not really bringing them back), and chewing on sticks and twigs.  He would spend all day out there if he could.  Us on the other hand, have enough after about 30-40 minutes.  Can’t complain though, those out east have much more snow than we do! 

God continues to bless our work here at Syndoulos.  Our new women’s group, Northern GLOW (God’s Lights of the World) is quite busy.  We are greatly enjoying meeting together, praying together, and studying God’s word.  Jason continues to have lots on his plate, but little by little he is checking things off his list.  As we near this busy holiday season, Jason is preparing for the many services and activities.  Lots of “firsts” coming our way. 

I went to the city’s performance of “Annie”!  It was amazing!  There is really a lot of great talent up here in Alaska.  A golden retriever played Sandy.  She was adorable!  This performing company does three shows a year.  I think I may have to audition for one in the future.  It brought back many awesome memories. 

After a day and half of the stomach flu, Jason is feeling much better.  Saturday evening it came on really quickly, but he seemed to recover just as quickly.  He made it through everything on Sunday just fine. 

We had the UAF students over last night and enjoyed some great fellowship, food, and pumpkin carving.  You’ll see some pictures of our work!  It’s been great to get to know these students, and begin a mini-campus ministry.  We hope to continue meeting once or twice a month with Bible studies, food, activities, and much more!

Winter is here in Fairbanks, AK

Yes, winter is here.  All you Wisconsinites who are complaining about the 40's.  Our temperature continues to decrease each day.  During the night, our temps are around 10 degrees.  It is definitely colder, but not as bad as I thought 10 degrees would feel.  It is definitely a DRY cold!  Makes a huge difference.

Not too much new this week.  On Saturday, I had nothing planned!  So I decided to take 6-8 hours and make my Grandma Reuer's famous Kuchen and Caramel Rolls!  YUM!  It all turned out great.  Pictures down below show the process! 

Sunday was a long day once again, but a great day.  We were at church till about 2:30 p.m.  (made it back for the last quarter of the Packer game)  With Sunday school, Bible class, church, farewell with treats, and a congregational meeting, it made for a long Sunday.  It was great to be able to talk as a congregation.  So many exciting new things to begin.  We just love the energy and excitement of the congregation and it's members.  God is good!
